Those soldiers who experience vicious fighting, taking part in the most verocious battles of history, can go insane, acquiring what is called the “thousand-yard stare”, which is the empty, expressionless, unfocused look seen in someone face after acute psychological distress. However, those who are strong enough, the war can carve out a special countenance, which is simply a battle-hardened expression, which betray the real warrior. Thus, the war can either break you, or forge the fighter spirit inside you.
