Junkers Ju 88

The Junkers Ju 88 was a German World War II heavy fighter aircraft. Aside from its role for which it had been designed, fighter and ground attack aircraft, the Ju 88 could adapt to fulfill different roles such as night fighter, ground-attack, dive bomber, and reconnaissance aircraft. This low-wing, general-purpose heavy fighter partially replaced the Dornier Do 17 bomber.

The Junkers Ju 88 was designed by the German engineer Hugo Junkers in 1936 and was produced by the Junkers company. It entered service in the Luftwaffe in 1939. Approximately 15,000 units were manufactured in several variants. It first saw action during the invasion of Poland, in September 1939. It was also fielded by the Luftwaffe in the Norwegian Campaign, the Battle of France, and on the Russian Front. In 1943 Findland bought 24 Ju 88s from Germany to fight its war against the Soviet Union.
