The OF-40 was an Italian main battle tank manufactured by OTO Melara and Fiat between 1980 and 1985. Although it was made in Italy, the Italian Army did not purchase any unit, the only country interested in acquiring this tank was United Arab Emirates, which bought 46 tanks. However, the OF-40 was an excellent and advanced tank for its time, using the same type of armament, armor, and engine as the German Leopard 1. Its weapons included a 105mm rifled-bore L7 gun, and two 7.62mm machine guns. The ammunition was stored in the front of the hull, on the left hand side, with the driver sitting on the right hand side of the hull. The armor was rolled homogeneous armor, which consisted of extra-hardened steel. The OF-40 was powered by an MTU MB 838 Ca M500 diesel engine, that delivered 825 hp. It could reach a maximum speed of 60 km per hour on road and had an operational range of 600 km.
