Taffy 3

Also called Task Unit 77.4.3, Taffy 3 was a US Navy 7th Fleet’s task unit assigned to the protection of the US amphious forces during the Allied landing on Leyte Island, in the Philippines, in October 1944. Under the command of Rear Adm Clifton Sprague, it consisted of 6 escort carriers, 3 destroyers, and 4 destroyer escorts. These destroyers acted as screen ships for the light aircraft carriers. Despite of being made up of a reduced number of small vessels, with the carriers having at their disposal only 28 aircraft each, Taffy 3 put up a ferocious fight during the naval engagement off Samar Island (north of Leyte), in the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 25, 1944, defeating a stronger Japanese fleet.

Escort carriers: USS Gambier Bay CVE-73, Kalinin Bay CVE-68, Fanshaw Bay CVE-70, Kitkun Bay CVE-71, St Lo CVE-63.

Destroyers: USS Johnston DD-557, Hoel DD-533, Heermann DD-532

Destroyer escorts: USS John C Buttler DE-339, Raymond DE-341, Dennis DE-405, and Samuel B Roberts DE-413.
